Average Reading Speed: How Many Words Per Minute?
How long will this take to read? It depends on reading speed, measured in words per minute (WPM). Knowing the averages lets you estimate reading and speaking time for articles, scripts and presentations.
Typical reading speeds
| Reader | Words per minute |
|---|---|
| Average adult (silent) | ~200–250 |
| College student | ~250–300 |
| Reading aloud / narration | ~130–150 |
| Audiobook / podcast pace | ~150–160 |
| Speed reader | 400–700+ |
Reading vs. speaking time
People read silently far faster than they speak. That's why a 1,000-word article takes about 5 minutes to read but closer to 7–8 minutes to say aloud. When writing a speech or video script, plan around the speaking rate (~130 WPM), not the reading rate.
How to estimate time for any text
Divide the word count by the WPM: a 1,500-word post ÷ 200 ≈ 7.5 minutes to read. Our word counter does this automatically and lets you adjust the WPM slider to match your audience — handy for technical content (read slower) or familiar material (read faster).
Improving reading speed
- Stop subvocalizing (silently "saying" every word).
- Read in chunks rather than word-by-word.
- Reduce regression (re-reading) by using a pointer or guide.
